Why do US political parties have more than one presidential candidate?

MiKeY! asked the question:

Why do US political parties have more than one presidential candidate? ie: Democrat have Clinton and Obama. Both from same party but seem to be in the same race to be a president as if they were rivals or from different parties.
Oh OK I think I get the pictures! Now they’re campaigning to be nominated as candidate for the President and VP position against the other parties. Correct? I think it is called: PRIMARY?

What is the purpose of having different political parties?

ltdteam68 asked the question:

Can someone on here explain to me why we have political parties. Each stand for this or that. If you take the main two dem. and rep. for example. If one side thinks this is right the other thinks its wrong. Shouldnt we get rid of all parties and do whats right in the particular situation and vote according to whats best for the people and what is morally correct instead of voting a certain way b/c thats the way your party votes. It just doesnt make sense to me. I feel like no parties have our best interest in mind, just how their party can control everything. Can someone please explain this to me.

Why do we get so caught up on political parties?

enterrador asked the question:

Why do we get so caught up on political parties, that some parents get mad at their children if they decided to vote for the opposite party that the parents support? Shouldn’t it be a choice, and why do people base their decisions on party before they even hear what both candidates have to say? Is it ignorance?
I’ve heard some people that i know say, “well if they are democrats, i don’t wanna hear what they gotta say”.

What roles do political parties play in the organization of Congress?

aglove2189 asked the question:

current electoral procedures make the political parties less important in electing a person to congressional office. So why then are parties so important in actually carrying out congressional work? Be sure to discuss the role of parties in leadership positions and in the committee structure. Do you think the system needs to be revised?

can we make the political parties account for their election manifestos?

M B R asked the question:

Being one of the responsible citizens can we not have all the political parties account for their election manifestos. How can they give all the promises? Should they not show how they are going to achieve the results/promises they have given in election manifestos. Considering the manifestos as official promises can we not force the political party answer on the floor of the assembly/parliament. If that can’t be done then it is the high time to make them stick to their manifestos and deliver.

Would politics work better without political parties?

cutieclaire2205 asked the question:

I have chosen to write a project on this subject for school. Do we need political parties to keep everything in order in our political system? Or does being a party member create a conflict for politicians because they have to do what their party says rather than what their voters say?
